about us
Post Name
The Milwaukee Women’s Post 448 applied for membership in the American Legion in 1945. The charter was signed in 1946 with the name World War II Women’s Post No. 448. The Post was named for the group of World War II women who organized our Post in 1945. In 1956 and 1957, membership into the Post began including Korean Veterans. As a result of the inclusion of Korean Veterans, the Post’s name was changed to the Milwaukee Women’s Post 448.
Community’s History
Milwaukee Women's Post 448 has a rich history in and with the Milwaukee
community and surrounding areas. Post members have been actively
involved in the semi–annual Veteran Stand Down, sponsoring
teenagers for Badger Boys and Girls State, sponsoring color and
essay contests for Children and Youth, Sound Taps, Blood Drive,
Americanism, local parades, National Salute to hospitalized Veterans,
Volunteerism at King and Union Grove Veteran Hospitals, assisting
Veterans with disability claims and other programs.
Post members have served during all periods of war from WWII to present day. Many members have served
and still continue to serve in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Post Formation
It is August l945. The “big” war has just ended. EDNA
BAHRS and a group of ambitious ex–service women are busy in
Milwaukee stopping any woman they see wearing a
ruptured
duck or a portion of a military uniform, strongly urging them to
become members of World War II Women’s Post No. 448 of The
American Legion. On November 27th, 1945 the charter members of the
Post signed the “Application for Post of The American Legion.”
At the end of 1945 there were 54 paid members. On May 24th, 1946
a permanent charter was issued to the “first” all women's
Post in Wisconsin with a current paid membership of 112.
